KNOW a KAOS DJ: DJ Redacted, Breakfast Special
/What's your name? Brett Clubbe
What's your show called? Currently I host the Breakfast Special on Friday mornings 6-9am
What's your show about? I try to provide a good soundtrack to the start of the day and weekend. I play a variety of music from Folk to Blues, Soul, Funk, Rock n Roll, Hip Hop, Afrobeat and other genres. I provide weather and traffic info for listeners commuting to work. I read the Calendar of Events and try to play music by artists performing live in the area. BandCamp is great for finding music by artists I’ve never heard before.
When and how did you start at KAOS?
I arrived in Olympia in the summer of 1991 and went to the station almost right away.
They were in need of fill in hosts for the summer (this was before the modern era of computerized playlists) so I was trained in two hours and on the air the next day.
I did various shows over the decades. In 1993 I started a environmental issues show called Earth Tremors which ran for a few years. That was back when week day afternoons were locally produced issues oriented talk radio. Programmers got death threats back then.
I was asked to do a soul music show at one point and did one Friday night each month for a few years.
Do you remember the first song you ever played on-air?
I don't remember the first song but I do remember on my first show which was a mid day fill in for someone who was out of town. I played Soundgarden in the middle of the day. Management quickly rushed into the studio to inform me “we don’t play that kind of music during the day.” With that my KAOS journey had begun.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had live on the air?
On April 30th 2025 I hosted a live performance of local band Fern Spores in the KAOS performance studio. That was a lot of fun and the inspiration for a new show coming soon that will see two live performances aired each month.
There have been a lot of fun times producing awesome local radio. I’ve done election night coverage in the past. I have had members of the Geoduck women's basketball team on the air quite a few times. I feel it is important for KAOS to be relevant to as many students as possible and since most college athletes never compete professionally they can get a peak at broadcasting at KAOS and maybe get interested in sports broadcasting after college.
How do you prepare for a show — or do you just wing it?
I used to go in and wing the whole show. That was back when record companies sent more CDs to the station and I could count on dozens fo new CDs every week to craft the show from.
I choose about half the music for the show from my personal collection with the other half from the new stacks in the KAOS studios. I start at 6am with new Folk, Country, Bluegrass releases and transition into Blues, RnB, Soul and Funk in the seven o’clock hour. During the final hour of the show I run one or two themes. It could be any of a number of segments I like to do; Canadian Content, 80’s Flashback, Dave’s Funky Bag (Reggae, Ska, Dub etc), Live From I5 (hip hop with a nod to Luvva J), and Matters of the Heart (songs of love, hate, betrayal and longing).
What’s something you wish more people knew about community radio?
I just wish more people knew about KAOS and the diversity of programming we offer.
What’s the last song you completely fell in love with?
The new album Moisturizer by Wet Leg is a delight with my fav song being Pillow Talk. It is a fun song about sex that can not be played on the radio, but you should def watch the video.
What record made the biggest impact on your life?
What was your first concert?
Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on the Moving Pictures tour in 1981. I talked my dad into taking my sister and I. I was 14 and she was 12. My dad got nosebleed seats and brought his girlfriend along. The adults hated it but the kids loved it. The next year on Signals tour we went again except this time a couple friends went to the show with us while the parents hung out at a local restaurant and got trashed.
After one of those shows there was a riot outside the arena. Toronto loves their hometown heroes.
What’s your favorite local music memory from where you grew up?
The town I grew up in was all about hockey and farming. The local music scene was strictly country, not my thing though a friend of our family played a mean zither.
After high school I moved to Toronto and got into the local scene there, like 1985-1989. This was a vibrant time for the local independent music scene. It was huge at the time and rivalled anything going on in New York, LA or any other scene in North America. There were per capita, more clubs, bars and joints with live music most nights than any other city in Canada or the States,
What’s your favorite local band or artist right now?
I really like Fern Spores. Their album The Understory is fantastic and their live show is very engaging. I hear they have a new single coming out soon I look forward to playing on KAOS.
Look for local band Yarrow to release an album by the end of this year, they are another local fav.
What artist do you like that would surprise your audience and friends the most?
I am a huge fan of the Drive By Truckers, have most of their releases and would travel far to see them perform live. I like the Jason Isbell era when they had three solid song writers all wiith different styles. Shona Tucker on bass back then was great too.
What artist do you not like that would surprise your audience and friends the most?
Dave Mathews? Great guy, not into his jam.
If you could interview any musician—living or dead—on your show, who would it be?
You
